Eagle River Biking Trails
The Eagle River area offers an extensive network of trails that cater to all levels of cyclists, from casual family riders to adventurous mountain bikers. With nearly 80 miles of trails, the region is a premier destination for exploring the Northwoods of Wisconsin on two wheels.
Main Trail Systems:
Three Eagle Trail: A signature 13-mile trail connecting Eagle River and Three Lakes. It features a 10-foot wide crushed limestone surface, scenic boardwalks (including a 660-foot span over Mud Creek), and passes through serene forests and wetlands.
Heart of Vilas County Paved Trail System: This premier system includes over 50 miles of paved paths connecting several Northwoods communities. It is famous for its smooth surface, bridge crossings, and spectacular lake views, making it ideal for road bikes and families.
Nicolet North Trail: Located east of Eagle River within the Nicolet National Forest, this 15-mile trail offers a more rugged experience through deep woods and connects with the Anvil Lake Trail.
Wilderness Lakes Trail: A multi-state loop covering over 40 miles that utilizes both paved paths and road routes, crossing into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Key Highlights:
Diverse Landscapes: Riders can experience everything from boreal forests and pristine marshes to idyllic lakeside vistas and charming downtown areas.
Biking & Brews: The area is known for "Cycling and Suds," with many trails conveniently located near local breweries, supper clubs, and restaurants, allowing cyclists to refuel after a ride.
Accessibility: Most trails are designed with flat or rolling terrain to ensure they are accessible for all ages and skill levels, while specialized "flow trails" are available for those looking for more technical terrain.
Wildlife & Nature: The trails are teeming with local wildlife, providing excellent opportunities for birdwatching and enjoying the "immaculate silence" of the Northwoods.
Whether you are looking for a short scenic commute or a long-distance cycling adventure, the Eagle River trail system provides a high-quality outdoor experience in every season (except winter, when many transition to cross-country skiing).
